Tell us about the wildlife
Polar bears, walruses, seals, foxes , reindeer and birds galore. Distinct lack of whales (only one), but you can’t have everything.
Tell us about Zodiac excursions
The best one was to look at some sea ice in the fog. So atmospheric. We only did two and they were both the best excursions we did. Would have loved to have done more. Safety standards were very high.
Tell us about the expedition team
Simon and Michael were both fantastic. Such amazing young men. So helpful, knowledgeable, clever. Bird lecture was the best.
Tell us about the Rembrandt van Rijn
Would definitely choose Rembrandt again. So nice to be on a small boat. Good food. Bobby, the catering manager, was so obliging to me as a vegetarian and went out of his way to make sure I was well fed.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to The Arctic?
No need to take walking boots. All trips needed wellies because of the zodiac landings. Walks were short. No need for NOK. Longyearbyen only accepts cards because it doesn’t have a bank. You can’t take too many warm clothes.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
It’s made me want to travel more, but at the same time I know I need to seriously look further into ways of reducing my carbon footprint.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
You were all very helpful, but some of the information we received didn’t help. eg we didn’t need walking boots. These took up a lot of unnecessary suitcase room. Also it would have been nice to have been told that the whole travelling group, apart from us two, was German. Fortunately I speak German, but we did feel a bit marginalised at times.
